Orked, a 16-year-old Malay schoolgirl, likes Chinese men and especially their eyes. One day, she is roaming the market in search of films by her favorite filmmaker Wong Kar-wai and turns up at the stall of Chinese Jason, who sells pirated VCDs. Orked is quite taken with Jason and the feeling is mutual.

Jason’s family is less thrilled by his new friend, they do not consider a friendship with a Malay girl a good idea. Orked’s family also need some time adjusting to her burgeoning romance, but eventually they do accept Jason.

Sepet is a love story between two people from very different cultural and social backgrounds. The film deals with stereotypes of race and explores the complexities of a multiracial society.
